Justice (rtd.) Nico Tuijn, Non- Executive Director, Policy & Ethics
Nico Tuijn is a distinguished jurist and recently retired senior judge of the Court of Appeal in ’s-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands, where he served with distinction in the Criminal Law Division. With a judicial career spanning over three decades, Nico brings to ABS&P International Law Firm a wealth of expertise in criminal, commercial, and family law, as well as an exceptional record of public service and international legal consultancy.
Educated in Law and Public Administration at the University of Leiden, Nico began his legal career as a judicial trainee (RAIO) before becoming a Judge of the Court of First Instance in 1989. He was appointed to the Court of Appeal in 2002 and served as Deputy Chief Justice from 2009 to 2021. He continues to serve part-time as Deputy Justice at the same Court since 2022.
In parallel with his domestic judicial work, Nico has maintained a strong international profile. He has served as a short-term legal expert for the European Union, the International Monetary Fund, the Council of Europe, and other bodies in jurisdictions including Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Malaysia. He has advised on judicial reform, rule of law, and criminal justice systems, often contributing as a consultant, lecturer, or mission expert on behalf of institutions such as the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the American Bar Association, and the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute.
He is a long-standing member of the Meijers Committee, a leading independent think tank on European law, advising on matters of criminal justice, migration, constitutional rights, and non-discrimination. He also contributes to legal education and ethics as a member of the Advisory Board of the Master of Law Studies at the Free University of Amsterdam and as an examiner for the Netherlands Bar Association.
Outside the legal domain, Nico is deeply committed to social justice and children’s welfare. He is the president of the Anak Terlantar Foundation, which provides education and care for impoverished children and orphans in Indonesia, and he serves as an ambassador for the European Charity Fund in The Netherlands.
